Mila's Reading Corner - Book Five
It is our fifth month with Mila’s Reading Corner and we’ve read some incredible books that celebrate and honor diversity. We’ve even read some books that helped us have conversations with Mila about race and racism. Our little book club has helped foster Mila’s awareness and empathy. We are proud to share the books with you all in hopes of doing the same for you and your little ones.
This month we are reading a gorgeous book called Beautiful Beautiful Me written by Ashley Sirah Hinton. This book features children of all colors as they all proudly exclaim that they are beautiful inside and out! We specifically chose this book this month because it is such a fun read and Mila loves looking at all the different children in the book. The book pages pop with color and detail which makes it a lot of fun. We tend to read it multiple times a week. Our favorite quote is in beginning “From the darkest of darks to the lightest of lights. Our colors are perfect and made just right.” We also enjoy how the book includes delicious foods on each page as the children cook and prepare yummy things to eat together. It is such a fun read!!
After reading this book Mila started making positive connections about the people in her life that she loves that also look different from her. Her God Father, her teacher, her friend in class … she loves them all and they all have different skin color than her. She is learning to honor their differences and celebrate their skin, personality and life. Seeing her become more aware makes us proud. And truthfully, I think it is important for this kind of learning to happen now at such a young age.
