Mila's Colorful Room Refresh

As most of you know Mila’s room has been through a few transitions since she was a baby. Mila’s nursery is still one of my most favorite spaces we’ve ever put together and if you look closely now you’ll see some things that have carried on through her five years. Take a look at Mila’s nursery HERE. If you remember, when I was pregnant with Maya, we gave Mila’s room a little Big Sis refresh since we needed her toddler bed to go back to a crib for the baby. So we bought Mila a real bed and updated a few touches around her room, you can see that HERE. And now … we decided to upgrade Mila to bunk beds and well the rest is a colorful rainbow of fun. Take a look!

Mila turned five just before the new year and holy wow has she grown up into quite the little girl! It still is shocking she isn’t so little anymore! Mila is so fun, heartwarming and is just always down for a good time. She has a fierce attitude, loves to make people laugh and has a serious love for all things rainbow. Mila’s room is such an expression of who she is and while it has evolved over the last few years, it still remains colorful and is the best setting for F U N!

We decided to upgrade Mila’s bed to a bunk bed for more space when we have family over and MAYBE if the girls want to, they can end up sharing a room in the future. Mila has been wanting bunk beds for a while now and we found the perfect ones. They are a great height for little ones, sturdy and surprisingly easy to put together! I’ve linked some of Mila’s room items below in case you are interested!

One tiny detail we love are the rainbow felt ball garlands that hang above Mila’s bed. They add a bit of whimsy to the room, a perfect funky detail. Displayed on Mila’s shelves are mini mementos of things that have a story, a dash of big brother, and some sacred toys Mila’s Abuela (grandma) has gifted her. Of course her sparkling unicorn bank is guarding all of Mila’s keepsakes. She’ll tell everyone that visits her room “You know I have a $100 in there.” Take a peek at this special little shelf area below … My personal favorites include the photo of her at Disneyland holding a bubble wand and the tiny pink sunglasses she used to be OBSESSED with when she was a toddler.

Just below the shelves lives Mila’s basket bassinet we used when she was a baby. It now is home to all of her plushies. I didn’t have the heart to give the bassinet up and now I’m glad I didn’t. These plushies get pulled out daily and the bassinet ended up being a great place for them to all get stuffed into.

This new Colorful Room Refresh was a chance for Mila to filter through her things that she didn’t play with any more and to make room for the things she still enjoys. She also was in need of just open space to do whatever it was she wanted. We needed to eliminate some large furniture/play pieces and replace them with things that offered more storage. More storage was key. I love the white bench we found that gives a place to sit while also gives us a ton of storage within! Most of Mila’s guests sit on the bench when they visit, and it often is center stage to some intense doll imaginative play. If you lift the bench lid it houses all of Mila’s dress up gear!

Another piece I LOVE is Mila’s new dresser. It is long and tall with deep drawers. It holds so much clothing and doesn’t take up too much space. As you may notice, green is a favorite color around here and it was the color of Mila’s crib. The green color was the jumping off point when putting together Mila’s nursery years ago. I’m tied to that color now and it lives on within Maya’s nursery, which you can tour HERE. I wanted to keep that green color present and when I found this dresser I HAD to get it. It is fun and funky and keeps the green alive and well within Mila’s space.

You’ve all seen Mila’s book nook. Ever since Mila was a baby she’s been very into books and it is looking like Maya is following in her footsteps! Both girls end up here often, books strewn across the floor, happily reading and browsing through pages. As a family we end up in this nook choosing titles to read before bed.

One thing we added this year was an art easel. This thing has been great so far and again, has space for more storage! It has a dry erase board, paper roll, and chalk board on the other side. It is the stage for play school and has even been a unique cash wrap station when playing store. :) Just behind the easel you can spot Mila’s tent that we pull out for movie nights in her room. We started doing that last year and it has become a fun Mom + Me tradition. The tent also gets pulled out when the girls want to play house, princess castle, and the latest is “Maya let’s go to the mall and try on new clothes!” The tent transforms into many different things!

Mila’s pride for her Minnie Mouse ear collection makes me smile. We collect these and finally found a cool way to display them + keep them organized!

With all the new space Mila can use her wobble board in the center of her room. She seems extra grown up when she uses her kid Alexa to play Jojo Siwa songs and then jumps on her wobble board. We bought Mila this wobble board for her birthday and it has quickly become a family favorite! We all like to play on it.

As a parent what I love most is how we were able to double her closet as a space to house dresses/coats on one side and the other is full on toy storage! Everything has a home and it ends up helping Mila put things back when she is done. The baskets are great because it is easy to just stuff things back into them. I don’t care what the baskets look like on the inside so long as things get put away! I’ve labeled them and you know, after a few weeks we have to do some damage control. But for the most part it is a working system ;)
