Mila's Reading Corner - Book One

Back in June we started a kids book club centered around diverse reads called Mila’s Reading Corner! We call it that because in Mila’s room she has a cozy reading corner where we can often find her nestled within reading to herself. It is my favorite spot in her room and most evenings before bed the whole family jams in and reads stories together. Since Mila was just a baby she’s had a fascination with books and “reading” the pages. It started as baby gibberish while she mimicked actual reading. Then once she learned how to actually talk, she’d read by describing what she saw on each page. Currently Mila still doesn’t know how to read but she continues to read the pages and now we are focusing on identifying sight words.
With everything going in our world and families spending tons more time at home, I thought it would be fun + helpful to start a kids book club we could all do. It is simple, pick and choose what books your family would like to read together and learn from. Then download and print our book club worksheet (linked above) and fill it out together. The idea here is really is to discuss the book and what your children learn from it.

It is a sweet book that celebrates different skin colors while featuring various desserts. Mila LOVES this book and the little girl who is telling the story. While working on our book club activity sheet I asked Mila questions about the book and really tried to drive home the fact that we need to honor the fact that our friends have different skin colors than we do.
While I think it is kind that we tell our children people are all the same and we need to be friends with everyone despite their differences. I really want Mila to take note of our difference and learn how to celebrate people who are different than her. I want her to understand that based on our skin color people can be treated differently. We are teaching Mila to look out for people being treated unfairly based on their differences and find the courage and empathy to speak up and support them. I’m a firm believer that raising anti bias children starts NOW at baby Maya + Mila’s young ages. This kids book club centered around diverse reads will hopefully help induce these much needed conversations with our kids.
