Welcome to Mila’s Reading Corner - A Kids Book Club Centered Around Diverse Reads. One of the things that has helped us broach the topic of racism with Mila are children’s books. Within the last two weeks I’ve ordered a large handful of books to help make our home library more diverse. I hate the fact that it has taken me this long to wake up and make this change! We’ve started to read them daily and it has really been eye opening for all of us. Mila seems to understand fully that we are to love one another no matter what. Though with these new title additions we are able to extend that notion and support it with actual knowledge about race, racism, and actual Black people of color that have carried out vital roles in our history.

We’ve been able to open up about hard hitting topics and in turn have learned quite a bit together as a family. We recognize that raising antiracist + empathic children is lifelong work, which is why we thought starting a monthly book club would be helpful in keeping the learning consistent. Plus, share what we read and learn with our friends!

We are starting with a handful of incredible children's books geared towards race, equality, and that truly highlight Black people of color. Though we aren’t stopping there, we will be introducing children’s books that deal with all ethnicities, gender, gender expression, mental health and more. So we hope you’ll join each month! Children are smart and soak in all that is around them. Starting these conversations now when they are little is crucial.

I’m hoping this will be just one healthy step in helping foster Mila’s ability to empathize with those who are different from her and stand with them in solidarity.

Mila’s Reading Corner is simple to join in. We’ll share what book we are reading at the start of the month on Instagram + Facebook. As well as a fun activity download you and your child can do after reading the book of the month. You can choose to purchase the book if you don’t have it already. By the middle of the month we’ll share a video of Mila and I reading the book, we’ll share our thoughts and what we learned, and our book club activity sheet. I am hoping this will be a fun learning experience for us all! Mila has always been in love with reading so starting her own book club of sorts goes hand in hand.

Please join us this month as we will be reading Skin Like Mine by Latashia M. Perry. Click HERE for a link to purchase the book if you choose. In two weeks we’ll share a video of Mila and I reading this months book and chatting about our thoughts and what we’ve learned. In the video we’ll also go over the activity page. Feel free to do this along with us with your own children and if you share on social, please tag @babyboybakery and use #milasreadingcorner so we can see!

Happy Reading Friends!
